Debian games

July 25th, 2007

This post lists some games I have played and enjoyed on Debian. These are probably packaged for many other distributions as well, but for convenience of lazy Debian users, I’ve listed the package names :-)

To install all games mentioned in this article:

# aptitude install bzflag crack-attack chromium kobodeluxe nexuiz wesnoth xmoto

BZFlag

bzfi0004.jpg

A 3D multiplayer tank battle game. BZFlag differs quite a lot from other 3D shooting games. The player controls a tank that has only one type of weapon available (at time). Various flags can be picked up, some changing the type of weapon the tank fires, while others affect the tank itself (from giving it wings to guided missile etc). Tanks can only shoot horizontally, and shots have no vertical acceleration. Moreover, tanks can only turn around slowly. Combined with (optionally) bouncing bullets, this is a game that requires some quick thinking. Any flag can turn into a deadly weapon when used properly with a good strategy.

By the way, the screenshot is from three years ago, but the gameplay has not dramatically changed since then. :-)

Crack-attack

Crack-Attack

If you ever had problems with a Tetris addiction, don’t try this one out. The basic idea is to line three of same colored blocks in line and then you are on a good way towards addiction…

Chromium
Chromium screenshot #1

A good old style top-down scrolling arcade game with a variety of weapons, enemies, nice effects and good music. Completely controlled with mouse as well.

Kobo Deluxe

Kobo Deluxe

Another classical style arcade game. This time you get to hold ctrl (the shooting key) down while desperately dancing on the arrow keys to control your ship. The aim is to destroy all bases on each map. Of course, various enemy ships don’t like the idea, and will be coming after you.

Nexuiz

Nexuiz

Nexuiz is a fast-paced 3D deathmatch game with high-end and complex graphics effects“. It’s a multiplayer game but you can also play local campaign against computer-controlled bots, which is just perfect for people like me who aren’t good in these games :-P

The bulk of the single player campaign is on fast fragging, but some of the maps are also played in same team with bots. Content also varies, with some maps featuring points that need to be captured, CTF, changed gravity, last man standing, and so on…

Size: Etch: 142MB (194 MB with nexuiz-music), Sid: 230 MB (283 MB)

Pingus

Pingus

Lemmings clone, except with penguins (of course!). This game is badly lacking levels (although it ships with a map editor), but it’s fun while it lasts.

Wesnoth

Wesnoth

Wesnoth is a very nice turn-based strategy game (nice because it has a very polished look, nice UI, and fitting music). It has both singleplayer campaigns, and possibility for multiplayer game. You usually start with one unit, which is used to recruit other units. These units can then be used to fight off enemies and capture more villages (for greater income). A somewhat unique feature is that units can gain experience through combat, and advance levels into much stronger units. Old units that survive can be recalled on next scenario.

X-Moto

X-Moto

A Linux clone of Elasto Mania. Simply put, you are in control of a motorbike, which you need to use to collect all apples found on a map, and finally to hit a flower. Weird concept, but it works. At least if you can handle the frustration of repeating a level dozens of times.
