Gmail tagging Google Reader mail as spam

March 15th, 2009

I find it quite funny that Gmail seemed to tag mail from Google Reader as spam. To be exact, it tagged a news item I sent to myself using the [x] Send me a copy of this e-mail feature. I don’t think this is the first time Gmail has been marking mail from other Google services as spam, so I guess they really don’t exclude their own services :-)

Gmail not forwarding all mail… yes it is

June 1st, 2008

It seems Gmail’s forwarding feature does not really forward all mail (true for Apps at least). When you select “Settings->Forwarding and POP/IMAP->Forward a copy of incoming mail to” and set an e-mail there, only the e-mails sent to your literal address (“user@somewhere”) are forwarded. E-mails that were already forwarded to that address or sent with the ‘+’ suffix (eg. “user+tag@somewhere”) are *not* forwarded. You can’t even use filters to achieve this.

This sucks, because when using Apps and regular gmail account you most likely would want to forward a couple of aliases (eg. webmaster) to the main account@domain and then all coming to that to regular gmail. And you can’t use the ‘+’ suffix for the real address. :(

Update: Okay, I was too hasty. Looks like the above holds true only for when you send e-mail from your regular gmail account to the Apps one. When sent externally, all mail seems to be forwarded regardless of whether ‘+’ suffix is used or whether it’s sent to the actual account (“user+tag”, “webmaster+tag”, etc. are forwarded).

Piwik – an open source alternative to Google Analytics

May 19th, 2008

I recently blogged about trying out Google Analytics. The service is nice, but I’d much prefer to keep my hands on the data than let Google store it. In fact, they aren’t giving you the data, only some reports they believe you want to see. So an open source alternative to Google Analytics would be much wanted, as that would let you keep the data yourself.

Analytics enabled on blog and wiki

March 13th, 2008

Google Analytics has been now enabled for both the blog and the wiki.

If you are worried about your privacy on this or other sites that use Google Analytics for usage statistics (a lot of them do), I recommend installing the NoScript extension for Firefox (or using some other means to disable the javascripts in other browsers). With NoScript you can just mark google-analytics.com as untrusted and you’ve successfully opted out from (some of) Google’s evil future plans :-)

Considering Google Analytics

March 13th, 2008

I generally dislike the idea of one corporation having access to vast amounts of information, but privacy is something you can sell for a price nowadays – if you have any in the first place. Because of the extensive statistics Google Analytics provides, I started wondering whether I should start using it as well.
